young Guide Ranger talked about her opportunity to go to Iceland on an
International Camp. Well, she has just returned and wanted to report back to you
about the experience. Hi, my name is Naomi Morcumb, and I have just come back from
the trip of a lifetime. From the 22nd the 29th August I was at the Icelandic
International Jamboree, with almost 25,000 other Girl Guides and Scouts from
around the world. Including; Croatia, Norway, Sweden, Canada, USA and many many
more. The theme of the Jamboree was Vikings. At the Jamboree we had the
opportunity to share our culture and Guiding ideas with others and found out
about other cultures and how Guiding and Scouting works overseas. I went to
campfires where we shared songs and rhymes. I also went on a water safari and
monkey swings. We had a day living as a Viking in which we dressed up and ate
roast lamb and made necklaces from iron and learnt a Viking dance. We also spent
a few days seeing the sights such as the blue lagoon; this is a naturally
occurring geothermal swimming pool. I also saw magnificent waterfalls and
geysers. We also went whale watching and I saw minky whales, puffins and white
beaked dolphins. I’d like to say a big thank-you to all those who helped me
raise £1000 which allowed me to go. I will always remember my experience. Closer to home, in June, 63 Brownies from the four packs in
our District, took part in an attempt to break a Guinness Book of Records record
for the biggest ever sleepover. The giant sleepover was also to raise funds for Save the
Children and our District raised £100. The girls had a great time with plenty of
games, making craft and each pack entertaining the others. They managed to be
quiet for five hours overnight and all clean their teeth at the same time in the
morning (both being requirements for the record)! Dianne Speight (Tawny Owl)
